Brillance: Youth Scholar Spotlight

Black History Month leads us pirouetting into Women’s History Month. To honor exemplary youth for their academic and community service work, it is my honor to launch Youth Scholar Spotlight, as a branch of the Arts and Mentoring Academy, modeled after Exuberant Creations, LLC: Artist Spotlight... As they walk in the spirit and legacy of  women who have come before them, they are striving toward greatness.

Youth Scholar Spotlight will feature young women scholars, ages 14-21, who have received art by yours truly. Many of the works were gifts created by me many moons ago “just because.” I have had the pleasure of watching them flourish and accomplish so much in their young years. My hope was that the work would encourage and uplift them, in some way – to say “I see you.”

During a time where we can all hold onto hope and joy, be sure to check back here for updates. Youth who are thriving, soaring and will undoubtedly make our future brighter, will make you smile.

I proudly showcase the young women who have inspired my vision to amplify their stories.

    The Voice of Jamila Parker...

"I am a woman. I am a Revolutionary African American woman. I stand for change. In order for me to make change, I first am going to make a change in myself. I am committed to the making a change in the way I speak to my family and the way I love my family. I am going to love them in the way I want to love them. I am going to love them better. I am going to start speaking clearly, so people can understand me. That is a very important aspect of being a Revolutionary leader."

Excerpt from Voices of Brotherhood/Sister Sol, by Jamila Parker, the Liberation Program (2003)

    Edited by Khary Lazarre-White

Voices is a collection of writings from youth in a Harlem-based community organization, serving ages 7-21 "collectively exploring themselves and the world while experiencing diverse programs that fuel their minds, bodies and spirits."
